A critical review of the reasons, utilitarian and non-utilitarian, commonly given for teaching modern foreign languages in schools. Kevin Williams's radical conclusion is that the most defensible of these reasons are insufficient to justify the place of MFL in the new National Curriculum as a compulsory subject from 11-16.
